Full Description:
This hands-on workshop introduces participants to an accessible process for creating layered moving-image collages using green screen techniques, everyday objects, natural imagery, and light. Working together, participants will explore how familiar materials can be transformed into immersive digital environments that remain rooted in observation, experimentation, and play.
Rather than approaching green screen as a technical effect, the workshop frames digital image-making as an extension of collage, assemblage, and mixed-media practice. Participants will create short video studies using objects, handmade materials, and imagery inspired by the natural world, learning how simple compositing techniques can bring together multiple layers of image, texture, color, and movement into a single living composition.
Throughout the workshop, Wyona Gene and Arvid Tomayko will guide participants through a series of creative prompts while facilitating an ongoing conversation around embodied practice, ecology, material exploration, and the evolving relationships between technology and contemporary art. The emphasis is on curiosity and experimentation, encouraging participants to discover new ways of working with materials they may already know while introducing digital tools as another creative medium.
Using a simple editing workflow, participants will combine their imagery into layered moving compositions before experiencing their work projected onto the exhibition's inflatable sculptures. As light wraps across the sculptural forms, participants will see how familiar images become transformed through scale, texture, and movement, creating immersive environments that blur the boundaries between physical and digital space.
This first workshop focuses on creating imagery and exploring projection as an artistic material. Participants interested in continuing the process are invited to return for the second workshop, where Arvid Tomayko will introduce projection mapping techniques that allow these moving-image collages to be carefully adapted to inflatable sculptures and architectural spaces.
No previous experience is necessary. The workshop is designed for artists, makers, craftspeople, students, and curious community members interested in exploring new creative tools through an approachable and collaborative process.
